Yesteryear Beeswax Candle Recipe

Making beeswax candles at home is a fun and rewarding DIY project. Here's a simple recipe for making rolled beeswax candles, which is one of the easiest methods:

Materials:

  • Beeswax blocks (for melting)
  • Candle wick (pre-cut or on a spool)
  • Double boiler or a heatproof container and a saucepan
  • Candy thermometer
  • Clothespins or candle-dipping rods
  • Cookie sheet or wax paper
  • Optional: Dye chips or essential oils for coloring and scent

Instructions:

  1. Prepare your workspace: Cover your work area with newspaper or a protective cloth to catch any wax drips and make cleanup easier. Ensure good ventilation as working with melted wax can produce fumes.

  2. Measure and cut the wick: Measure the length you want for your candles and cut the wick accordingly, adding a few extra inches to allow for dipping and trimming.

  3. Melt the beeswax: If you have beeswax blocks, break them into smaller pieces to facilitate melting or grate them for faster melting . Use a double boiler or a heatproof container placed in a saucepan filled with water. Heat the water gently, and place the beeswax pieces in the top container. Stir occasionally until the wax is completely melted.

  4. Monitor the temperature: Attach a candy thermometer to the side of the container to monitor the temperature of the melted wax. Beeswax should be heated to around 71-77 degrees Celsius.

  5. Optional: Add color and scent: If you want to color your candles, you can add dye chips to the melted wax. If you'd like to add fragrance, consider using essential oils. Stir these additives into the melted wax until fully incorporated. Be cautious when adding scent as some essential oils can be highly concentrated.

  6. Dip the candles: Dip the wick into the melted beeswax, making sure to completely submerge it. Hold it there for a few seconds to allow the wax to cool and solidify slightly. Then, pull it out and let it cool for a minute or two between each dip.

  7. Repeat the dipping: Continue dipping and cooling the candle repeatedly until it reaches your desired thickness. The more dips, the thicker the candle will be. Typically, you'll need to dip at least 20-30 times to achieve a suitable candle size.

  8. Straighten and trim: As the candles cool between dips, gently straighten them to ensure they don't become crooked. Trim the bottom of the candle if it becomes uneven during the dipping process.

  9. Cool and harden: Allow the dipped candles to cool and harden completely on a cookie sheet or a piece of wax paper. This may take a few hours.

  10. Trim the wicks: Trim the wicks at both ends of the candles to your desired length.

  11. Enjoy your dipped beeswax candles: Your homemade dipped beeswax candles are now ready to use. Light them up and enjoy the warm, natural glow and subtle scent of beeswax.

Dipping candles can be a time-consuming process, but it's a satisfying way to create unique, handmade candles with a rustic charm.
