Homemade Beeswax Mascara
Making your own mascara at home using beeswax can be a fun and natural alternative to store-bought options. Here's a basic recipe for DIY beeswax mascara:
Ingredients:
- 1 teaspoon beeswax pastilles or grated beeswax
- 1 teaspoon coconut oil (or other carrier oil like jojoba oil)
- 1 teaspoon shea butter
- 1-2 capsules of activated charcoal (for black mascara) or cocoa powder (for brown mascara)
- 1-2 drops of vitamin E oil (optional, for added benefits)
- A small container or an old mascara tube with a clean wand
Instructions:
-
Prepare Your Work Area:
- Make sure your work area is clean and sanitized, and have all your ingredients and equipment ready.
-
Weigh and Measure Ingredients:
- Measure out the beeswax, coconut oil, and shea butter using a kitchen scale or measuring spoons.
-
Melt the Beeswax and Oils:
- In a microwave-safe container or a double boiler, melt the beeswax, coconut oil, and shea butter together. If using a microwave, heat in short 10-15 second bursts, stirring between each interval until fully melted.
-
Add Color:
- If you want black mascara, open 1-2 capsules of activated charcoal and mix it into the melted mixture until you achieve the desired shade. For brown mascara, use cocoa powder instead. Adjust the amount of charcoal or cocoa powder to achieve the color you like.
-
Add Vitamin E Oil (Optional):
- If you wish to add extra nourishment to your mascara, you can include a few drops of vitamin E oil. Stir it into the mixture.
-
Cool Slightly:
- Allow the mixture to cool for a couple of minutes until it thickens slightly but is still pourable.
-
Transfer to Container:
- Carefully pour the mascara mixture into your chosen container or an old, cleaned mascara tube.
-
Cool and Set:
- Allow the mascara to cool and set for several hours. It will harden as it cools.
-
Use Your Homemade Mascara:
- Once the mascara is completely set, it's ready to use. Apply it to your lashes using a clean mascara wand or brush. Keep in mind that homemade mascara may have a different texture and staying power compared to commercial products.
-
Store Your Mascara:
- Store your homemade beeswax mascara in a cool, dry place. If you notice any changes in color, scent, or texture, it's best to discontinue use.
Please be cautious when using homemade cosmetics, and be aware of any allergies or sensitivities you may have. Homemade mascara may not be as long-lasting or waterproof as commercial mascara, so you may need to reapply it throughout the day if desired.
