Beeswax Crayons

Homemade beeswax crayons are a natural and fun alternative to store-bought crayons. Making them is deeply fulfilling!:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup grated/ chopped up beeswax
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil (or another vegetable oil)
  • 1-2 tablespoons powdered pigments or non-toxic crayon colorants (for color)

Materials:

  • Silicone molds or empty crayon wrappers
  • Double boiler or microwave-safe container
  • Stirring spoon
  • Wax paper or parchment paper

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Your Work Area: Cover your work surface with newspaper or a protective cloth to catch any wax drips and make cleanup easier. Ensure good ventilation as working with melted wax can produce fumes.

  2. Weigh and Measure Ingredients: Measure the grated beeswax, coconut oil, and powdered pigments or colorants using a kitchen scale. You can adjust the colorant amount to achieve your desired crayon color.

  3. Melt the Beeswax and Oil: Use a double boiler or a microwave-safe container to melt the grated beeswax and coconut oil together. If using a microwave, heat in 20-30 second intervals, stirring each time until fully melted.

  4. Pour into Molds: Carefully pour the melted crayon mixture into silicone molds or empty crayon wrappers. Fill them almost to the top, leaving a little space for the crayons to settle.

  5. Cool and Solidify: Allow the crayons to cool and solidify for several hours. Placing them in the refrigerator can speed up the process.

  6. Remove from Molds: Once the crayons are completely solid, gently pop them out of the molds. If using crayon wrappers, you may need to peel the paper away.

  7. Use Your Homemade Crayons: Your homemade beeswax crayons are ready to use. Enjoy coloring with these natural, eco-friendly crayons!

  8. Store: If you have extra crayons or want to save them for later use, store them in an airtight container to prevent them from drying out.

Homemade beeswax crayons can be a fun and creative project for kids and adults alike. You can customize the colors and even make scented crayons using different essential oils. Beeswax crayons also have a pleasant, natural scent and are safe for children to use.
